Vancouver Community College recognized as bike friendly leader

Each year, HUB recognizes local businesses for their leadership and commitment to a more bike friendly future. However, this year marks the first ever Bike Friendly Business Awards ceremony, and Vancouver Community College will be one of the guests of honour.

Based on a series of bikeability criteria, the selection panel found that VCC is taking concrete steps towards encouraging cycling, and investing in healthier employees, sustainable transportation, and a more bike-friendly workplace. Out of the entire Metro Vancouver region, VCC's Downtown campus has been selected as the runner-up of the HUB 2013 Bike Friendly Business Award: Building Category.

VCC's Environment and Sustainability Manager, Wendy Avis says, “We couldn't be more proud! Cycling is a good way for our students to work exercise into their busy schedules and stay healthy while helping the planet. VCC supports all staff, faculty and students who bike to campus, and we're excited to build upon the  amenities we currently provide.”

"Businesses themselves have put a lot into making biking to work and shop easier," said Donna Chen, Bike Friendly Business Program Manager of HUB: Your Cycling Connection. "Our 2013 award winners are local employers who made that connection—biking and walking makes people healthier and happier, and builds loyalty with customers and employees. We want to celebrate their achievements publicly."

The awards ceremony will be held Wednesday, February 5, at the ING DIRECT Cafe.
