VCC’s new part-time Sport and Recreation Management Certificate program, launching mid-September, has been designed through a needs-based analysis with industry professionals, including employees of the Vancouver Whitecaps FC. “We asked industry employers what characteristics they would look for when hiring, then designed the curriculum around those needs,” says program coordinator Jennifer Gossen.
The new curriculum highlights the unique business of sport at all levels, including the study of organizational structures, governance and career opportunities in local, provincial, national and international sport and recreation associations, all while instilling values of leadership, diversity, community and personal and professional development.
We also know it’s just wrong to keep athletes behind a desk! That’s why, in addition to lectures, presentations and discussions, VCC’s sport and recreation management students will participate in interactive activities and practical exercises, offering the opportunity to learn by doing. This includes a comprehensive practicum experience in a sports sector business or organization.
