Visually Impaired Adult Program


Get the skills you need to continue your education. This program teaches visually impaired students skills they will need to take more advanced post-secondary-level courses at VCC or elsewhere. Classes of individualized instruction are available in subjects like English and mathematics, as well as training in communication skills, such as Braille and keyboarding.

Program Description

Students may choose to study full-time or part-time.

Computer courses include Windows, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, database management and Internet training using speech, Braille and large print access. These basic courses are designed to give students the skills they need to take more advanced post-secondary courses. Students at more advanced levels are normally encouraged to integrate into regular upgrading or training programs.

Classes are generally held Monday to Friday, 8:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. (subject to change).

VCC welcomes applications from Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

As Vancouver Community College is a post-secondary institution committed to educating adult learners, applicants should be 16 years of age or older or a graduate of a secondary school.

Please note that you must submit official transcripts and educational documents to support your application; unfortunately, we cannot accept photocopies or fax versions.

This course covers the basic knowledge and skills needed to use computer application programs in a Microsoft Windows environment. Students learn to work with the Windows desktop, application windows, and the taskbar. Using Windows Explorer, students navigate drives and folders, and find, copy, move and delete files. Using various applications, students create, open and save files. They learn to scroll through files, show and hide toolbars, and print parts of documents.

This course covers the basic skills necessary to effectively use the Internet as an information and communications tool. Students learn how to display, navigate and print web pages as well as how to find information on specific topics and assess the reliability of the information. They learn to save files, images, text and entire web pages to disk. Students create and use an email account for writing, replying to, forwarding and storing email messages. A zip utility is used to zip and unzip files for faster transferability across the Internet.
