This nine-month program offers basic skill training necessary for success as an entry-level worker.

The program consists of approximately 26 weeks of classroom/kitchen training and 12 weeks of supervised community work experience matched to the student's interests and abilities.

VCC welcomes applications from Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

As Vancouver Community College is a post-secondary institution committed to educating adult learners, applicants should be 16 years of age or older or a graduate of a secondary school.

Program Specific

Missing prerequisites? VCC offers courses in Adult Upgrading and English as an Additional Language to help you meet your goals.
  • Interview with VCC's program coordinator for students with disabilities
  • Successful interview with two members of the Career and Community Education Department, which includes a hands-on assessment. Applicants may be asked to sign a release of information for any reports that will provide the program staff with further information
  • Diagnosis or history that identifies a difficulty with learning
  • Demonstrated comfort in an alternative learning environment designed for students with disabilities
  • Previous career exploration that supports training in the food service industry
  • Possess a Grade 5 reading level. If an applicant does not have reading level documentation, an informal reading assessment can be administered to determine functional reading level. Lesser qualified applicants may be considered with department approval
  • Ability and willingness to travel independently to the college and workplace
  • Demonstrated emotional and medical stability. A checklist is used to document behaviour, emotional problems, or medical conditions that could significantly impair learning or compromise the safety of the student and/or others
  • Ability to independently manage own medication
  • Ability to maintain appropriate personal hygiene, and possess the ability to independently attend to personal care needs
  • Desire and willingness to work in a professional kitchen, and perform tasks in an efficient and timely manner
  • Ability to attend classroom and practicum on a full-time basis
  • Ability to perform program-related tasks with strength and endurance
  • Good finger and hand dexterity for handling food and equipment

VCC’s Community and Career Education (CACE) Department offers adult special education programs and courses for students with disabilities.

Areas of study include career awareness and exploration, food service careers, retail and hospitality, computer applications, literacy, and numeracy.
