VCC offers a variety of courses for Deaf and hard of hearing students. These consist of English upgrading and numeracy Skills, American Sign Language (ASL), Speechreading, and the Job Readiness program.

Program Description

Program Description

Students taking DHH English Upgrading have the option to attend full-time (20 hours per week) or part-time (10 hours per week). Students enroll in classes scheduled from September until the end of January, or from February to the end of June.

Students taking DHH ASL for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Adults or DHH Sign Language Skills have the option to attend full-time (20 hours per week) or part-time (10 hours per week). Students enroll in classes scheduled from September until the end of January, or from February to the end of June.

Students taking DHH Speechreading have the option of taking the Monday evening class (2.5 hours per week) or Tuesday afternoon class (2.5 hours per week). Classes scheduled to begin in September, January, and April.

Admission Requirements

General

VCC welcomes applications from Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

As Vancouver Community College is a post-secondary institution committed to educating adult learners, applicants should be 16 years of age or older or a graduate of a secondary school.

Please note that you must submit official transcripts and educational documents to support your application; unfortunately, we cannot accept photocopies or fax versions.


Program Specific

Missing prerequisites? VCC offers courses in Adult Upgrading and English as an Additional Language to help you meet your goals.

Applicants must have an interview with the department prior to applying. Applicants should apply well in advance of the start dates.

  • Student must be Deaf or hard of hearing.
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Ability to communicate independently in spoken or written English, or American Sign Language (ASL), or another sign language
  • Department interview required
  • ESL assessment may be required
