Legal Administrative Assistant (Online)

The Legal Administrative Assistant Online Collaborative Program is currently not accepting applications, as BC Campus is no longer admitting new students to this program. Those students currently registered and close to completion should register for final courses as soon as possible, as BC Campus will only be supporting these courses until April 1, 2018. In future there may be a different delivery model, but, VCC has not been notified as yet.

Adapt your administrative skills to work in the legal field. This specialist program is intended for graduates of the administrative assistant program as well as experienced administrative assistants. Students acquire the skills and knowledge to apply time management principles and set priorities to create, edit, store and retrieve legal documents and correspondence. Legal administrative assistants learn procedures and create documents in the areas of corporate law, conveyancing, litigation, family law, and wills and estates.

This specialist program is intended for graduates of the Administrative Assistant Program as well as experienced administrative assistants wishing to work in the legal field. Graduates may find employment in a variety of positions, including junior legal administrative assistant or a legal office support employee in the following organizations: law firms, legal departments of large corporations, real estate companies, insurance firms, financial organizations and government agencies.

Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates of this program will be able to:

  • Apply time management principles
  • Set priorities
  • Create, edit, print, store and retrieve legal documents and correspondence using computers
  • Perform legal administrative assistant duties and procedures in the areas of general law, litigation, conveyancing, family law, corporate procedures, and wills and estates

Instructional Activities, Design and Delivery Mode

The Legal Administrative Assistant Program (part-time) is offered entirely online. Courses are accessed via a learning management system provided by BCcampus. All course resources, activities, instruction, and communication take place in the BCcampus online learning environment. Instructional activities vary by course but typically include individual and collaborative group work. Most courses have a final invigilated exam that must be written at VCC, unless alternative arrangements have been made with the Department Head.

Evaluation of Student Learning

An evaluation of the learning progress of each student is prepared by the instructor. This evaluation is by theory and practical examinations, and assessment of practical assignments.

VCC welcomes applications from Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

As Vancouver Community College is a post-secondary institution committed to educating adult learners, applicants should be 16 years of age or older or a graduate of a secondary school.

Missing prerequisites? VCC offers courses in Adult Upgrading and English as an Additional Language to help you meet your goals.

Successful completion of the Vancouver Community College Administrative Assistant Program or equivalent program completed in the English language; OR

Minimum of one year's administrative assistant experience as verified by employer, and the following:

  • Grade 12 completion or equivalent
  • English 12 with a C , or English language proficiency
  • A tested keyboarding speed of 50 gross words per minute on a 5-minute test with a maximum of 5 errors
  • Certified course completion, or experience using word processing software (MS Word preferred) as verified by an employer
  • Seats are offered to qualified applicants who have met all admission requirements, on a first-qualified, first-served basis.

    • Ability to accept responsibility and to plan and reason logically
    • Ability to follow instructions and work under pressure
    • Good organizational skills and adaptability to change
    • Strong computer skills
    • Ability to work cooperatively with others

    At the time of acceptance, a $300 non-refundable deposit will be required to hold your seat if accepted more than two months before the start date of the program. Full payment of the first installment will be required within two months before the start date.
