Program Specific

Missing prerequisites? VCC offers courses in Adult Upgrading and English as an Additional Language to help you meet your goals.

College policy: Admission to Vancouver Community College is based on the underlying principle of the potential for success within the time limits of the specific courses/programs.  Basic education is a program for adults who want to improve their reading, writing or math from beginning levels to the end of Grade 8. Basic computer skills are also offered.

Students applying for basic education classes must:

  1. Meet with the department and complete a reading, writing or math assessment. Bring any special tool or device (computer, tablet) needed for writing in basic education classes.
  2. Understand and speak or use English comfortably.
  3. Recognize and write some letters of the English alphabet.
  4. Answer questions on reading materials at the level they are able to read.
  5. Work co-operatively in a group or independently in the self-paced classroom.

Basic education is not an appropriate placement for students who have a strong academic background indicated by post-secondary training at a university or similar academic institution.

Students are referred to the Vancouver Community College program that best meets their educational needs. Students who need more work on oral language skills are normally referred to ESL programs. Students who are Deaf or hard of hearing or visually impaired are normally referred to a program for students with disabilities.
