Tutoring ESOL Certificate (English to Speakers of Other Languages)

The Tutoring ESOL Certificate is designed for people who wish to tutor English to speakers of other languages in a one-to-one or small group-teaching situations for adults. Many of the techniques and ideas are also applicable to teaching school-aged children. Graduates acquire the basic instructional skills and knowledge to tutor adults in English both in Canada and overseas as well as have an understanding of the basic theory and the practical application of concepts and skills required in English language instruction.

Program Description
The program has been designed to involve the student in a variety of learning environments and instructional delivery methods. Throughout the program, the student will participate in lectures, demonstrations, peer teaching, group teaching, and individual practice teaching. There may be guest instructors, instructional videos and an opportunity to use computer labs. There is a practicum. Students must complete all course work within a 2-year time period.

Convention refugees as designated by the federal government; Foreign live-in caregivers; Individuals with work permits valid for at least one year, covering the duration of studies; or those with Approval in Principle letters from Citizenship and Immigration Canada; Legal dependents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents (certain conditions apply); Diplomats and their direct dependents; International exchange students. As Vancouver Community College is a post-secondary institution committed to
educating adult learners, applicants should be 18 years of age or older or a graduate of a secondary school.
Please note that you must submit official transcripts and educational documents to support your application; unfortunately, we cannot accept photocopies or fax versions.
Program Specific
1) Grade 12 graduation, including English 12* with a C+ or better, or equivalent
2) Criminal Record Search
*Applicants whose first language is other than English, who are presenting foreign documents, must achieve the following scores on one of the following English Language proficiency tests:
- Minimum score of 79 on the internet based TOEFL, or
- Band 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS - academic stream) or,
- Minimum score of 145/200 on the VCC English Language Assessment Test
