TEFL Young Learners Certificate

The TEFL Young Learners Certificate is designed for teaching English to young learners from six to sixteen years of age, with a main focus on the ages of six to thirteen. The program has been developed in response to the growing demand worldwide for English language instruction for young learners. As well, the program is specially designed for Canadian and international students studying to become English language teachers in countries outside Canada, or those tutoring children in Canada.

Program Description
This program involves students in a variety of learning environments and instructional delivery methods. Participants are shown a variety of practical activities, to begin building up a collection of materials and ideas. By the end of the course, students have a better understanding of how
- children learn a second language
- to accommodate a variety of learning styles in the classroom
- to develop learning strategies and promote learner independence
- to evaluate and use ESL materials
- to develop materials of their own
- to evaluate the progress of their learners
- to teach grammar, pronunciation and the four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing)
- to use a variety of interesting and exciting activities in the classroom, including project work, arts and crafts, storytelling, poetry, etc.

Admission Requirements
General
VCC welcomes applications from Canadian citizens, permanent residents and international students.
Exceptions

Convention refugees as designated by the federal government; Foreign live-in caregivers; Individuals with work permits valid for at least one year, covering the duration of studies; or those with Approval in Principle letters from Citizenship and Immigration Canada; Legal dependents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents (certain conditions apply); Diplomats and their direct dependents; International exchange students. VCC will require proof of citizenship, residency, diplomatic or refugee status. Please see VCC's policy relating to admission for non-citizens and non-residents for more information. |

As Vancouver Community College is a post-secondary institution committed to
educating adult learners, applicants should be 18 years of age or older or a graduate of a secondary school.
Please note that you must submit official transcripts and educational documents to support your application; unfortunately, we cannot accept photocopies or fax versions.
Program Specific
1) Grade 12 graduation, including English 12* with a C+ or better, or equivalent
*Applicants whose first language is other than English, who are presenting foreign documents, must achieve the following scores on one of the following English Language proficiency tests:
- Minimum score of 79 on the internet based TOEFL or,
- Band 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS - academic stream) or,
- Minimum score of 145/200 on the VCC English Language Assessment Test
Recommended characteristics
- A solid academic background with a good standard of spoken and written English
- An interest in working with children
- Interest in, respect for and experience with other cultures
- Experience in working or volunteering with people of other cultures
- Patient and understanding
