TESOL Distance Diploma (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)

The TESOL Distance Diploma is for students who want to teach English to speakers of other languages and designed for those wishing to complete the diploma by distance education. This program provides courses in foundations of TESOL instruction, teaching grammar, pronunciation, reading, writing, speaking and listening. There are also 25 hours of practice teaching as part of the practicum course. Students progress through the courses with the support and instruction of experienced, skilled teacher trainers aided by online discussion forums and weekly tasks.
Alert/Important Announcement to Current and Prospective TESOL Distance Diploma Students
Please be advised of the following proposed changes to the TESOL Distance Diploma program effective April 2011.
* As of April 2011, TESO 1104 - Teaching Grammar (3.5 credits) will be phased out and will be replaced by TESO 1168 - Teaching Grammar 1(3.0 credits) and TESO 1169 - Teaching Grammar 2 (3.0 credits).
* As of April 2011, TESO 1106 - Teaching Reading and Writing (3.5 credits) will be phased out and will be replaced by TESO 1133 - Teaching Reading (3.0 credits) and TESO 1128 - Teaching Writing (3.0 credits).
If students wish to take TESO 1104 Teaching Grammar and TESO 1106 Teaching Reading and Writing, students must take these courses before April 2011; after April 2011 these two courses will no longer exist.

Program Description
Students are expected to be able to organize their studies independently and meet assignment deadlines. They are supported in this by communicating with their instructors and classmates via the MOODLE online platform to discuss course content, listen to audio tapes, watch classroom demonstrations, answer quizzes, access readings, complete weekly tasks and participate in group projects. Instructors are available through the online course, via e-mail and have office hours by phone.
This program is offered on a part-time basis however students must complete all course work within a 3-year time period.
Note: no more than 3 courses may be taken in a term.

Please note, some courses taught at the Downtown campus are equivalent to courses taught in the Distance program. These include:
TESO 1103 Foundations of TESOL is equivalent to TESO 1101 TESOL Overview
TESO 1105 Teaching Listening & Speaking is equivalent to TESO 1267 Teaching Listening & Speaking
TESO 1108 Teaching Pronunciation is equivalent to TESO 1127 Teaching Pronunciation
TESO 1107 TESOL Practicum is equivalent to TESO 1270 TESOL Internship.
Students who have completed any of these courses at the Downtown campus can apply for exemption status.

Credential opportunities for graduates of the TESOL Distance Diploma. This program is recognized for professional certification (level 2) by TESL Canada.

As Vancouver Community College is a post-secondary institution committed to
educating adult learners, applicants should be 18 years of age or older or a graduate of a secondary school.
Please note that you must submit official transcripts and educational documents to support your application; unfortunately, we cannot accept photocopies or fax versions.
Program Specific
1) Bachelor degree (all post-secondary transcripts must be sealed and official and mailed directly to the VCC Admissions Office from the originating institution)
2) 1st Year University English* with a minimum 'C+' or equivalent
* If English is not your first language and you have foreign documents, completion of an English Language Assessment is required plus an ICES evaluation. For an evaluation application and current fee information, email ICES or call toll free 1.866.434.9197.
Acceptable English language assessments and scores include:
- a minimum score of 88 on the internet based TOEFL with no score lower than 22, or
- a Band 6.5 or higher on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS - academic stream) with no band score less than 6.0 with a minimum score of 6.5 on the speaking and listening band, or
- a minimum score of 145/200 on the VCC English Language Assessment Test with minimum scores as follows: Listening: 27/30; Speaking: 27/30; Essay: 17/20; Reading: 50/70. The ELA score must be free of a pronunciation recommendation (note: TESL Canada does not recognize the ELA as a language proficiency score)
