Program Description
TUTORS
The Homefront Learning Program trains volunteers to tutor in the homes of adult students who cannot attend ESL classes due to family commitments or health reasons.
This program provides tutors with a 12 hour training course at the Broadway campus, which includes a one-on-one tutoring practicum with an ESL student on the last session. Tutors are matched with a student who has been referred to the program. Homefront faculty assess students before introducing them to the tutors, and provide materials and books for tutors to use.
Tutors receive continued guidance and ongoing support from the Instructors. Tutors have access to the books, worksheets and tapes available in the Homefront Office/Resource Room as well as the VCC Broadway and Downtown Campus Libraries. Tutors receive a quarterly Newsletter and can attend workshops given by Homefront faculty.
Tutors are required to volunteer for a minimum of 50 hours (approximately six months) although most volunteers continue in the program beyond the six months.
TRAINING SCHEDULE
Volunteer Tutor Training Sessions are 12 hours and start in the Fall, Winter, and Spring.
