POSITION SUMMARY:
VCC's ASL & Deaf Studies full-time program (September to June) is designed for non-Deaf adult learners who already have some basic skills in ASL but who wish to study the language more intensely with an aim to developing fluency. During the program, they also learn about Deaf culture and the Deaf community, develop their interpersonal communication and public speaking skills, and examine the possible career development or study opportunities open to them upon completion.
Many students in the program wish to pursue a career in ASL/English interpreting or at least investigate the possibility. Some students envision going into other social services, or teaching Deaf children, or working in the classroom/community with Deaf-blind individuals or with Deaf persons who also have a disability. Students in the program develop understanding of the complexities of the socio-cultural, linguistic, and political context within which Deaf and non-Deaf persons interact. This program is an opportunity for students to look at the skills and knowledge required for various professional roles and to assess for themselves their own potential to become an ally to the Deaf community.
The core courses in the full-time program are:
� ASL Acquisition (3 Terms)
� ASL Lab (3 Terms)
� Deaf Culture & Community (3 Terms)
� Becoming An Ally (3 Terms)
� Public Speaking & English Grammar (Fall Term)
� Deaf Literature (Winter Term)
� ASL Literature (Spring Term) REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
� Provincial Instructor Diploma (and/or teaching experience)
� Excellent fluency in ASL
� Advanced study in linguistics of ASL (grammar, structure, syntax, etc)
� Advanced study in Deaf culture and community

The Department Head will be responsible for the coordination, supervision and direction of the curriculum and instruction within the department, and in accordance with the specific functions outlined below. - Comprehensive knowledge of the Lower Mainland tourism and hospitality industry with specific emphasis in the Asian Culinary Industry
- Demonstrated recent work experience of at least 10 years as a certified journeyman cook and a minimum 2 years managerial experience
